Juan de Dios Vargas grew up in a small Colombian town called Pitalito. He completed his Fine Arts studies at the National University in Bogotá. His practice investigates poverty, corruption, and violence, where drawing has played a leading role. This has been the main tool for the constitution of his projects until he developed sculptural and monumental approaches such as installation in public spaces. His interests are mainly focused on the concerns that afflict him: social inequality and how the armed conflict affects the country's peasants on a daily basis. He thinks of art not as an end but as a means to educate and generate reflection and introspection. Therein lies the genesis of his social interest, which he has developed not as a political artist, but as an artist who makes political art.
