Casa Zirio presents two bodies of work that understand photography as a situated practice, shaped by matter, community and the archive. Javier Vanegas (Bogotá, 1984), winner of Colombia’s 2023 National Photography Prize, brings AMPO, glass ambrotypes of people with albinism, and IAluna 2.0, images developed by chlorophyll printing on coca leaves alongside the Kogui community of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. As a counterpoint, the Gilberto Ante Archive: more than 27,000 negatives taken in Cuba between 1960 and 1990 by the official photographer of the Revolution, who also looked at its margins.

A Weight That Isn’t There

Ten artists and twenty-one works gathered around a single operation: the distance between what a work appears to be made of and what it is actually made of. Solar, by Germán Botero, an aluminum lattice that reads as a solid plate from the front and lets the wall show through from the side, set the course of the booth. Erika Díaz turned three porcelain vases into eighty cotton-paper tiles; Juan de Dios Vargas traced the Greek fret and the Andean chakana in breadcrumb on plant ash; Evelyn Tovar sealed roadside plants in encaustic over school study cards. Jerónimo Villa presented Estelas sordas Op. 19; Mario Vélez, a cone of golden mesh; Olga Gabrielle, the blown borosilicate of Nanzi; and Javier Vanegas, a 19th-century nude rebuilt from thousands of images gathered online. Ever Astudillo and Mariana Varela closed the presentation with painting and drawing.
